List of Walt Disney and Buena Vista video releases

[1]Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has released several hundred titles to home video since 1978, as well as direct-to-video features. They have been released on VHS, Beta, Laserdisc, CED Videodisc, CD Video, DVD, Universal Media Disc (UMD), and Blu-ray Disc. These are most of the notable releases that Disney put out on home video.

MCA Discovision

These were the titles licensed by Disney to MCA Discovision for their new format.

Fotomat Titles

The first 13 titles put for rental when Disney was working with Fotomat to get into the video business. These titles were later made for sale along with rental in October 1980.

(The number at the beginning of each line is Disney's stock number for the VHS/Beta release. The VS and BS indicated retail sale (VF and BF in Canada), while issues with just a V or a B after the number were rental.)

1980-1983

In addition to the 13 Fotomat titles being made for sale in late 1980, this is the release chart of Disney features from 1980 to 1983.

Walt Disney Cartoon Classics (1st Series)

The start of Disney's successful video line, the Walt Disney Cartoon Classics.

(The number at the end of each line is Disney's stock number for the VHS/Beta release, except for volume 6, which has the stock number for the laserdisc release.)

Walt Disney Cartoon Classics Limited Gold Editions

The 1984 Limited Gold Editions.

(The number at the beginning of each line is Disney's stock number for the VHS/Beta release.)

Walt Disney Cartoon Classics Limited Gold Editions II

The continuing part of the series in 1985.

(The number at the beginning of each line is Disney's stock number for the VHS/Beta release.)

DTV Titles

DTV stands for Disney Television (basically Disney's version of Music Television, or more notably known as MTV).

Background: MTV achieved success in the 1980's, this started around the time of the success height (everyone was watching music videos then for these reasons: 1. They were slick 2. They were "cool" and the "it" thing. 3. Particularly, they were stylish; and Disney had fears of not only losing its Disney Channel audience, but also losing sales of their home video division [this division]to these videos). Thus they were released around 1984 and ended with a ratings gamble for MTV in 1985.

(The number at the beginning of each line is Disney's stock number for the VHS/Beta release.)

Wrapped and Ready to Give Promotion (1984)

Walt Disney Classics

Walt Disney Cartoon Classics (2nd Series)

From 1987 to 1992, the series was revived with shorter videos in cardboard slipcover cases.

(The number at the end of each line is Disney's stock number for the VHS/Beta release.)

The laserdisc releases combined the material from two VHS releases (and in one case, three). Although they didn't use volume numbers, they shared the same titles, and the cover art for the laserdisc releases was simply the cover art for the VHS releases placed side-by-side.

Walt Disney Film Classics

Walt Disney Film Classics' is a home video series from 1997 to 1998. It was the third edition of Walt Disney's Studio Film Collection. This home video series features a line of classic Disney films starring Fred MacMurray, Hayley Mills and Don Knotts. American legends, such as Davy Crockett and Johnny Tremain, and Herbie The Love Bug also get their own titles in this series.

Walt Disney Mini-Classics

The last attempt to revive the Cartoon Classics series, with videos from 1987 to 1993, packaged in cardboard slipcover cases.

1985 Titles Repackaging

Starting in early 1985, many earlier Disney videos as well as some new titles were repackaged with white clamshells.

1985 Christmas Promotion

Starting on December 3, 1985, Disney started a Christmas promotion and priced all current 21 titles at $29.95 along with some newly repackaged titles. It ended on January 31, 1986.

Wonderland Sale

On May 28, 1986, Disney packaged some of their titles in cardboard slipcover cases for a Wonderland Sale Promotion. Alice in Wonderland however had The Classics packaging.

1986 Line-Up Part I

These were the several live-action films Disney packaged in white clamshells with slide-in artwork (plus two releases in cardboard slipcovers that looked nothing like the others in the line-up). They were like some of the titles in the 1985 Christmas promo. However, The Journey of Natty Gann and Return to Oz were in cardboard slipcover cases, mainly because they were contemporary features at the time.

1986-1988 Line-Up Part II

These videocassettes used cardboard slipcover packaging, the dark red FBI screens, a video dealer announcement, and the 1986 "Sorcerer Mickey" Walt Disney Home Video logo (with "presents" underneath). Although not every title had that opening.

Disney Sing-Along Songs

Disney's hit series from 1986 to 2006.

There were two versions of Under The Sea between 12/28/90 and 2/2/94. One is the 8/14/90 and the other is the 12/28/90. Technically, most of the copies of Under The Sea still retained the original previews as of 12/28/90.

Disney's Valentine Collection

$26.99 Promotion

Alongside Bambi's first video release from September–October 1989, there was a promotion where some titles were priced at $26.99, many newly repackaged.
